The Most Dangerous Place in the World Afghanistan has a restless past. A mountainous country the size of Texas, early conquerors such as Genghis Khan and Alexander the Great traveled though the high mountains and deep valleys on the way to India and China in search of riches and domination of the populations. It became a battleground for control of central Asia in the 19th century due to its proximity to other areas. Great Britain took control of the over dozen ethnic groups and established the first formal government, a monarchy, but granted the county independence soon after. The Soviet government offered the country economic assistance and allowed Afghanistan to remain self-governing until 1979. The invasion of the Soviet Union caused many to resist, and guerrilla forces called mujahideen declared a holy war on the Soviets. â€Å"The Soviets, and the Soviet-backed Afghan government, were met with fierce popular resistance. Guerrilla forces, calling themselves mujahideen, pledged a jihad, or holy war, to expel th e invaders.† (Afghanistan, 2) With the help of Pakistan and the United States, Afghanistan was able to repel the invasion. However, a pro-Soviet government stayed in control. Once the government was expelled, a vacuum of power remained. This allowed many rebel groups to fight to rule the country. The Taliban, a group of radical Islamic students, rose to power in 1996. The Taliban believed in harsh fundamental laws and left women with no rights.
